Speech & Language Pathology:
Helping Every Voice Be Heard

What are Speech and Language Pathology Services?

Our goal is to build strong communication foundations, enabling children to express their thoughts, needs, and feelings clearly, and to understand the world around them. We do this through assessment, diagnosis and treatment of concerns related to speech sound development, receptive and expressive language difficulties, social and play skill development and so much more.

  • As Speech Language Pathologists, we are trained to support a variety of communication concerns encompassing the areas below:

    • Speech Sound Production (Articulation/Phonology): Difficulty producing specific sounds, resulting in unclear speech.

    • Fluency (Stuttering): Helping children develop smoother speech patterns and strategies to manage disfluencies.

    • Receptive Language: Difficulties understanding spoken language, following directions, or comprehending stories.

    • Expressive Language: Challenges with using words, forming sentences, asking questions, or expressing thoughts and ideas.

    • Social Communication (Pragmatics): Supporting children in understanding and using language appropriately in social situations, including turn-taking, eye contact, and understanding non-verbal cues.

    • Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC): Assisting children who are non-verbal or have limited verbal communication in using tools like picture exchange systems, communication boards, or speech-generating devices.

    • Early Literacy Skills: Supporting foundational skills for reading and writing, such as phonological awareness (rhyming, syllables).

    • Play Skills: Developing the communication aspects of play, including imaginative play and symbolic play, which are crucial for language development.

    • Feeding & Swallowing Difficulties: Addressing challenges with eating, drinking, or oral motor skills that impact feeding (requires specialized SLP expertise, confirm if your team offers this).

  • Our Speech Language Pathology services are guided by the latest research and evidence-based practices to provide:

    • Comprehensive Assessment: We begin with a thorough assessment using either informal screenings or standardized assessments to pinpoint your child's specific communication strengths and areas needing support, understanding their unique learning profile.

    • Individualized Treatment Plans: Every plan is customized to your child's developmental stage, specific communication challenges, and your family's goals.

    • Functional & Goal-Oriented Therapy: We focus on practical, measurable outcomes that directly improve your child's ability to communicate effectively in their daily routines, at home, school, and in social settings.

    • Parent Education & Coaching: Empowering parents is key. We provide ongoing education, strategies, and home practice activities to integrate communication techniques into daily interactions, maximizing progress.

    • Collaborative Care: We work closely with other therapists at Ascend Pediatrics and other professionals to provide truly integrated and holistic support, recognizing the interconnectedness of development.

    • Building Rapport: Play helps establish a strong, trusting relationship between the child and therapist, creating a safe space for communication exploration.

    • Motivation & Engagement: When therapy feels like fun, children are more eager to participate, try new skills, and extend their communication efforts.

    • Natural Communication Contexts: Creating organic opportunities for children to use and understand language. For example, during imaginative play, children naturally practice vocabulary, sentence structure, turn-taking, and problem-solving.

    • Skill Generalization: Practicing communication skills within a variety of scenarios helps children generalize what they learn in therapy to real-life situations.

    • Sensory and Motor Integration: Many play activities naturally integrate sensory and motor components, which can support attention, regulation, and oral motor development, indirectly enhancing communication.

    • Direct intervention: This is our teaching time, whether through play or targeted approaches, we aim for high numbers or opportunities to practice and demonstrate skills

    • Parent coaching: Parents understanding and implementing therapy techniques at home is crucial for successful intervention. Our SLP’s provide coaching on how to support children at home in ways that are manageable for those busy schedules.

    • Home Practice Plans: Our SLP’s will review what, when and how to practice skills learned at home with practice plans. These may be verbal or written and will include home materials as appropriate.

  • We believe in being transparent about our rates to help you plan for your family’s care. Our fees reflect the specialized training and expertise of our clinicians, as well as the comprehensive care we provide. All Speech & Language Pathology sessions are set at a rate of $150 per hour. Sessions are typically scheduled for either 45 minutes or 1 hour plus 15 minutes of indirect time dedicated to professional documentation, planning, and care coordination, such as take home materials.
