Our NUKO Services

Ascend Pediatrics is excited about our collaboration with Nanaimo Unique Kids (NUKO), a dedicated organization committed to supporting neurodivergent children and their families!

Through this partnership, we are working to bring expert Occupational Therapy (OT) and Physiotherapy (PT) services directly to the Nanaimo community. Our goal is to enhance accessibility to specialized care, so families can receive the support they need closer to home. We look forward to working alongside NUKO to empower children and help them Ascend to their full potential.

Amy Hinton

Physiotherapist

Amy is a physiotherapist based on Vancouver Island, BC with a passion for functional play, movement, and client-centered care. She is especially drawn to working with neurological conditions, where she can support development through fun, engaging, and meaningful therapy that fits naturally into their everyday lives. She believes in creating a positive, supportive space where therapy feels less like work and more like play. She values the role of functional movement and purposeful activity in helping children build strength, independence, and confidence. Whether supporting mobility, motor planning, coordination or activity participation, she approaches each session with curiosity, compassion, and creativity.

Amy's approach is rooted in the biopsychosocial model, recognizing the importance of treating the whole child—not just the condition. She takes time to understand each child’s unique strengths, interests, and goals, working closely with families to create realistic, personalized plans that empower everyone involved in the rehabilitation journey.

Outside of work, you can find Amy exploring new hiking trails with her two dogs, running, or getting lost in a good book. Separate from her love of movement and activity, she's always on the hunt for the best local sweet treats!

Teanna Matchett

Occupational Therapist

Teanna is our occupational therapist and owner of Ascend Pediatrics. She has always loved being on the go and going onto the next challenge! Her love of working with families and children came about during her community pediatric placement at Inn from the Cold, a family homeless shelter in Calgary, Alberta.

She loves to look at the big picture and ensuring we are taking a team approach to meet the full needs of the family! Teanna has specialized training within picky eating, and loves to work within ADHD, sensory processing, self-care, mental health and emotional regulation skills. When supporting kids in these areas, she loves to dive into the process and build strong function skills and build confidence within themselves. Teanna has worked with many different families and disabilities over the years, making her experience diverse!

On her time off, Teanna is often spending time with her family! She can be found with her son out exploring enjoying the outdoors, or on those cold Alberta days enjoying a good Netflix binge!
